Uganda was once a prosperous country. Its great beauty
led Winston Churchill to refer to it as the 'Pearl
of Africa'. It may not be the gem it once way - corrupted
by violence, poverty, AIDS and political crisis -
but the Ugandans have proven their resilience and
Uganda is now considered to be a much safer place
to visit. It is home to stunning wildlife and scenery
like the misty Rwenzori Mountains of the Mmoon
and the natural marvel of the mountain gorilla of
Bwindi, one of the few places where the gorilla
still survive.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly
Zaire) crosses the heart of the equator in
Central Africa. It is troubled by ethnic strife and
civil war, but has been more peaceful since a ceasefire
in 1999. If you dare to visit these two troubled lands,
you'll discover amazing, strong people and some of
the most rare and dazzling nature in the world.
