American Rockies: Background and travel essentials

The Rockies cover over 1000 square miles of the United States of America from Canada to New Mexico. The region is official called the Rocky Mountain States and comprises of the four states of South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

Compared to the rest of the USA, the population is very low in the Rockies, but has a broad ethnic mix of native americans and african americans particularly in Denver.

The first two weeks in October are the best time to catch the breathtakingly beautiful fall in the Rockies. The colours are amazing and, because it’s low season, you can have the roads hotels to yourself.

Climate

Most of Colorado, Wyoming and Montana are situated high from the seas, you can enjoy warm summer days but frosty nights. Winters are severe, and beware cinooks, powerful seasonal winds and violent summer thunderstorms. Winter is the season for skiiers, many prefer the milder summer but it’s also a beautiful haven during the Fall. Whatever the season, there’s something to experience all year round.

Visas

All foreign visitors will need a US consulate visa, but in most places this can be done via a travel agent. Your passport must be valid for 6 months after your point of entry into the country.

Cash

The currency is $US and living costs are much cheaper than the bigger states cities. Accomodation costs are seasonal and range from $20 - $40 for a cheap motel.

The economy is in fluctuation but 1 US$ = approx £1.5 sterling

Check with your local currency exchange centre for up to date currency information.

Dress

If your planning to go hill climbing, trekking or outdoor sports bring appropriate outdoor kit for the mountainous terrains. Outdoor clothes are easily bought in the area at cheaper prices than Europe. Lightweight cottons are recommended during the summer in Colorado and Idaho.
