Hawai'i has always been one of the most liberal states in
the USA both politically and socially (so much so that Republican
presidential candidates don't even bother campaigning there).
This diverse society, often referred to as a 'rainbow' mix
of Asian, European and Pacific island heritage has always
had a strong and deep sense of tolerance.
Same sex unions have been legal in the state of Hawai'i since
the early 1990's, though the legal battle to reach that point
was long and fierce and continues to be a hot election issue.
The acceptance of 'Gay Unions' makes Hawai'i the only other
place in the USA aside from Vermont and the city of San Francisco
that recognizes them.
These are not actually official weddings but are recognized
for inheritance purposes and other legal matters (many other
states however do not recognize these unions performed in
Hawai'i) and rings are exchanged and vows are read just like
in a heterosexual wedding. The most popular location for same
sex unions is Maui. |
