Rick Steves- cure for insomnia
Samantha Brown- way too short
Anthony Bourdain -arguably second best but it is really short and concentrates on different cuisines more than sites
Dinky no-name pbs shows- no comparison
I think GT has proven itself to be the best authentic Travel Show on the tv today. |

Here are my thoughts with some of the competition:
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations: Focuses alot on food, but hey Tony is a chef and he loves to eat. He does a pretty good job visiting with the locals and getting to know the culture.
Passport to Europe/Latin America with Samantha: Way Way too short. Sam's show needs to be 1 hour. 22 minutes without commercials hardly covers anything of substance. She's charming and a good presenter, but the show's content lacks big time.
Rudy Maxa: Booooring! Rudy is really old and I just can't relate to him as a host.
Travel Cafe with Chuck Henry: This use to be on Travel Channel and in syndication here in the United States. Chuck's good, but his show is really short as well.
Lonely Planet: Six Degrees: Way too bizarre and eclectic for my tastes. |

It's produced by Lonely Planet in Australia....the same folks who make the books. GT use to be called Lonely Planet over a decade ago until LP decided to start their own TV division.
I just picked up the DVD's while on vacation in Asia....the show doesn't air in the United States. It airs on the Discovery Channel and Discovery Travel & Living in Canada, Australia, lots of Asia and throughout Europe.
Come to think of it, I would hardly consider this even close to be a competitor to GT since it doesn't even air here in the States. |

Banyan Productions' Travelers was way better than LP at that time. 1996-1998. But it never became a commercial success due to foolish marketing tactics by Discovery Communications[i.e. parent companey of discovery channel, travel channel etc.] Anthonney Bourdain is just doin what ian did a decade back. But he shows countries in much better light than Pilot did. e.g. India. 2nd best today.
Samantha brown, Travel cafe , World cafe are all B-grade travel flicks. |

Wel in my opinion theres nothin like a good aul ep of GT. nothing else really gets as indepth as GT.
Globe Trekker covers so many areas of Travel as wel....food and drink...wildlife...culture...and really trys to get of the beaten track and experience how the locals live.
for me every other show only scratches the surface in comparison!!! |

I never even watched a travel show until 1998 when I saw the first episodes of GT, then shown on the Travel Channel 3 times A DAY every day so it was hard to miss; cable being new and all. Everyone fell in love with Ian and Justine AND traveling; so we started! You can understand why we are so adamant and resistant about changes made to our favorite program. And why we are so saaaaddddd to see Ian go.... |
