I went to China in late August and while I was in Beijing, I went to a few street vendors and had spicy BBQ Octopus on a stick for around 3 RMB which is around 37 cents USD. Great bargain and the sticks were awesome!!

Very Chewy, but really good. If you ever travel to China, especially Asia always try to street food. Probably some of the tastiest food and a good bargain as well.

the most unique dinning experience that i had was when i was in tokyo with my father, we were looking for dinner one night, and wandered into this restaurant that served what i guess is a local type of chicken. we thought it was a restaurant serving izakayas and sushi on the pictures that the had of their foods on the outside of the restaurant. of course, we didn't know what the restaurant was about until we got in.

as it turned out, everything was chicken. i resorted to my favorite thing to do on trips: ordering foods at random without really knowing what they are. we ended up having:

a plate of raw chicken innards
a plate of raw chicken meat
chicken skewers
teppan fried chicken

it felt really weird eating raw chicken, especially the innerds, but i do have to admit that they tasted alright. the cooked parts were really good.

other unusual items that i've had:

horse sashimi in japan
minced raw beef in belgium
raw cod fish testicles here in the us
blood rice cake in taiwan
fried grasshoppers in thailand

yes and no. it's always no at the moment. i don't really think about the potential consequences when it comes to food until afterwards. plus, at the restaurant, it was packed with people, all eating raw chicken and innards, so i figured it must be relatively okay if everyone else is eating it.

OK, food ...

First off ... I am NOT a culinary expert ... nor am I a wine taster ... nor a cheese nibbler.

I AM a normal person who gets hungry and goes looking for food ... and since I travel a wee bit, I have learned some things that work for me.

Here in the United States if I want to check out the food in a "American" menu restaurant, I always order a prime rib. If they can't handle that, forget anything else. For fish, I order sautéed scallops ... again, if they can't handle that, then forget about it ... as they say in Jersey ... but with a wee bit more old country accent than I can muster.

Both should literally "melt" in one's mouth, and both should only have the subtle seasoning to enhance the basic flavor.

I'm afraid to ask ... no, no, don't tell me ... not here in public anyway. I think I will simply ask the local reference librarian ... discreetly. Wink

Now, back to food ... what's good there? What do you like to eat as a "local"?
