Holly Morris travels to North India through the
frantic streets of Calcutta and
onward to Sagar Island accompanying
500,000 pilgrims celebrating the winter solstice,
'ganga mela.' Tackling the incredible climb to
the top of Sandakphu, Holly gets
a glimpse of the five sacred peaks. On route she
encounters monasteries, shrines and tribes practising
rituals like Animism. Drinking
the local chai in Darjeeling
and travelling up the terrifying mountain trail
in a jeep, she passes through all the seasons
reaching the extremes of one of the most spectacular
views in the world at the summit. Before attempting
the climb herself, we accompany her as she visits
an old colonial hotel built for English and Scottish
bachelors who were starting at the tea plantations
and then to the museum devoted to some of the
great explorers and climbers. This is both an
outdoor experience and a cultural feat.
